Daphne Mennell: Chilkoot Trail Artist Residency
Throughout history, artists have seized the opportunity to immerse themselves in the natural landscape to gain new inspiration and perspectives. The Chilkoot Trail Artist Residency is an internationally recognized program providing that experience. The Yukon Arts Centre, Parks Canada, and the US National Park Service have come together to create an opportunity for established visual artists to spend two weeks hiking the Chilkoot Trail, pursuing their work. The artists offer workshops at campgrounds and interact with hikers in creative ways.
Daphne Mennell participated in the Chilkoot Trail Artist Residency Program during the summer of 2014. She sketched and painted her way over the 53 km historic route, collecting ideas and templates to complete a series of canvasses for a major exhibition at the Yukon Arts Centre in 2018.
Daphne is one of the Yukon’s better-known artists. She has a number of pieces in major public collections in the Yukon and in private collections throughout the world. Her paintings are known for their lively colour and movement, depicting the Yukon and Alaska landscapes she loves.
